First volume of the Dragon Ball DVD series, released by Toei Entertainment on 4 April 2007
Three anime adaptations have been created for Akira Toriyama's highly popular Dragon Ball manga series. All three were produced by Toei Animation. The first, titled simply Dragon Ball spanned 153 episodes, covering the first 16 volumes of the 42 volume manga series. It was originally licensed for an English release in North America by Harmony Gold USA who released a heavily edited version of the series in the late 1980s. Ill-received, it was quickly canceled. Dragon Ball returned to the North American audiences in 1995 when it was licensed by Funimation Entertainment. Funmation initially only aired thirteen episodes, also heavily edited, before dropping the project due to poor reception. In March 2001, Funimation announced the return of Dragon Ball to American television, featuring a new English audio track produced in house and less editing.[1][2] The redubbed episodes began airing on Cartoon Network on 20 August 2001[3] and aired on Colours TV and the Funimation Channel in 2006.[4] Funimation began releasing the uncut episodes of the first series to Region 1 DVD box sets in 18 March 2003, except for the first part of the series, the Emperor Pilaf Saga, due it still being licensed for distribution by Lionsgate Films. Funimation has recently confirmed that they will be releasing the first 31 episodes of the series in a DVD box set on September 15, 2009.[5]
The second Dragon Ball anime series, Dragon Ball Z, picked up where the first series left off and covers the final twenty-six volumes of the manga series. It premiered in Japan on Fuji Television on 26 April 1989, taking over its predecessor's time slot, and ran for 291 episodes until its conclusion on 31 January 1996. Funimation Entertainment also licensed Dragon Ball Z, premiering its edited dubbed episodes on WB in September 1996. In May 1998, the broadcast was canceled and Funimation stopped production of the dubbed episodes. Three months later, the series began airing on Cartoon Network as part of the channel's new Toonami programming block. In 1999, Funimation started dubbing the series again, now using their own in-house voice actors and with a new musical score. The series completed its run in April 2003. Later that year, Funimation redubbed the first 67 episodes of the series, restoring the removed content and replacing the Ocean Group dubbing with the same voice cast used in the later episodes. These redubbed episodes were released to DVD in uncut box sets, starting in April 2005.
Dragon Ball GT is the third, and final, anime television series for the Dragon Ball franchise. A direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z, the 64 episode series ran in Japan from 2 February 1996 until 19 November 1997.[6] Unlike the first two series, Dragon Ball GT is not directly based on the manga series written by Akira Toriyama, though he was involved in its production. Funimation's English dub of this final series premiered on Cartoon Network on 7 November 2003. Funimation created a composition episode entitled "A Grand Problem", using material from the first 16 episodes to summarize the story. This episode aired as the initial first episode of the series. The 16 skipped episodes were aired after the remaining episodes of the series had been broadcast.

| After three weeks, Goku succeeds in catching Bubbles. Goku is issued his second challenge, to hit Gregory with a large mallet. After two weeks of trying, Goku succeeds and masters the planet's gravity in the process. King Kai proceeds to teach Goku the Kaioken and Genki Dama. On Earth, Gohan's training with Piccolo comes to a head. While the Z Warriors finish their training with Kami and go their separate ways. | ||

| King Kai tests Goku's ability to create a Genki Dama with a large brick as a target, and Goku destroys it with no problems. However, King Kai warns Goku of the potential danger of creating Genki Dama on Earth. So Goku decides to only use it as a Hissatsu Waza. With his training complete, Goku, through King Kai, sends a telepathic message to Master Roshi to summon Shenron and resurrect him. On Earth Master Roshi, Bulma, and Oolong wastes no time in fulfilling Goku's request. Elsewhere in a large city, the Saiyans Nappa and Vegeta land on Earth to begin their search for the Dragon Balls. | ||

| The Z Warriors assemble in a remote area and prepare to battle the Saiyans, but the duo doesn't deem them a challenge. So Nappa cultivates some Saibaimen to battle the team instead. One of the creatures manages to grab Yamcha and explodes, killing him in process. Meanwhile Goku continues his trek back via the snake road. | ||

| Nappa faces off against the Z warriors and proves to be a formidable opponent. During his attack Tien loses his arm. In an act of desperation, Chiaotzu attaches himself to Nappa's back and sacrifices himself using a kamikaze technique. Grief stricken by Chiaotzu sacrifice, Tien puts all his chi into one Kikoho and dies of exhaustion. With the Z warriors now down three fighters, the team has high hopes for Goku's return. The Saiyans soon learn of their trump card and scoffs at the notion until Krillin informs the duo of Goku's special training. Intrigued by the possibility of Goku's increased strength, Vegeta issues a three-hour reprieve to get a chance to fight Goku. | ||

| Goku fails to arrive within the three-hour reprieve and the battle with the Saiyans recommences. Goku finally reaches the end of the snake road and rushes to reach the battlefield. Sensing Goku's impending arrival, Vegeta decides to find the Dragon Balls on planet Namek instead, and orders Nappa to kill the remaining Z warriors. Nappa fires a ki blast at Gohan, but Piccolo jumps in the way at the last second to shield Gohan from the blast. | ||

| Piccolo dies from Nappa's ki blast, resulting in Kami's death and the destruction of Earth's Dragon Balls. Goku finally arrives at the battlefield just in time to save Gohan and Krillin. Goku engages Nappa in battle and it quickly becomes clear that Goku is the superior fighter. Realizing this, Vegeta finally decides to step into the fight. | ||

| With Vegeta ready to enter the fight, Nappa realizes that he has lost, and prepares to attack Gohan and Krillin, but Goku uses his Kaioken to finally defeat Nappa. Goku tells Gohan and Krillin about Kaioken and states that the user must be careful because it may destroy his body and that King Kai warned him that going higher than 2x Kaioken will likely kill him. Because Goku easily defeated Nappa, Vegeta kills Nappa. Goku tells Gohan and Krillin to leave so he can fight Vegeta without distraction. After moving to a new battleground and beginning the fight, Goku realizes that 2x Kaioken isn't strong enough to defeat Vegeta and decides to break his promise to King Kai and use 3x Kaioken. | ||
