Original Flag of the Sultanate of Zanzibar
Flag used from independence in 1963 until the overthrow of the Sultanate in January 1964

Zanzibar's flag since 2005.

The flag of Zanzibar has changed dramatically since the country achieved independence in 1964. Upon independence, the Sultanate adopted a yellow flag with red horizontal bars along with green crescent moons to symbolize Islam. However it has since formed its own flag, to which the Tanzanian flag was added upon foundation of the United Republic of Tanzania
