Flute. Until the mid-18th century, the term meant recorder and the flute was specified by ‘flauto traverso’ or ‘traverso’. ‘Flauto d′amore’ refers to the flute in A, a minor 3rd below the concert instrument, and ‘flauto piccolo’ and ‘flautino’ signify a small recorder or flageolet. The term also refers to an organ stop.
