Biography

A quintet from Louisville, KY, Flaw aims at creating relevance and lively meaning to the nu metal scene, using it as the foundation for dynamic, hard-driven music. The core of Flaw pulled together in 1996 when Jason Daunt placed an ad for a guitarist and Chris Volz answered. Volz's adoptive mother, an opera singer who had performed at the Kennedy Center, had helped develop his musical talent. After she committed suicide when Volz was 12, he spent years in various types of psychotherapy, gaining insights that bypass most people. It was from this experience that Volz shaped his personal style of lyrics, expressing how one gets through inner turmoil and hurts. Songs such as "Inner Strength," "Whole" (a song about his mother's death), and "Only the Strong" reflect his inner growth.

Originally calling themselves F. Law, the group decided it was more open than the name implied, that everyone and everything has flaws. Thus, they dropped the period and became Flaw. In 1997, Ryan Jurhs (five-string bass, background vocals) joined with Volz and Daunt, while the rest of the lineup kept revolving. Jurhs had just finished his stint with the Marines and was joining the music scene. Within a few weeks, Flaw recorded their first indie record, American Arrogance. Two of the eight tracks, "Amendment" and "Reliance," are also on the band's official debut album, Through the Eyes. The indie record opened the door for Flaw to open for bands such as Econoline Crush and Fear Factory. The band put out two more independent records, Flaw in 1998 and Drama EP in 2000, both of which were well-received. Flaw's lineup firmed up in 1999 when Chris Ballinger (drums) and Lance Arny (guitar) came aboard. Arny tended toward being a technical player, while Daunt went for the impromptu odd sounds, and Volz aimed his lyrics at the healing process in life and childhood. The combination worked.

In 2000, Flaw showcased at CBGB in New York where Republic/Universal heard them and signed them up. With David Bottrill (who had taken Tool and Peter Gabriel to the top) as their producer, Flaw began recording at Sound City in Los Angeles in early 2001. Republic/Universal released Flaw's official debut album, Through the Eyes, in October 2001 in both clean and explicit versions. While the album had a hint of the Tool influence, the uniqueness of Flaw remained solid and the album received rave reviews. ~ Eleanor Ditzel, All Music Guide

Band history

1995-2004

Flaw was formed in 1995 when vocalist Chris Volz answered an ad in a local paper placed by guitarist Jason Daunt, looking for a singer for an alternative/industrial band. The band's rhythm section progressed through several line-ups but solidified with the addition of bassist Ryan Jurhs in 1996. That same year the band recorded their first independent record American Arrogance.

Because they were low on money, the band ordered everything they needed to record from the Musician's Friend catalog, then returned it using the 30-day return policy. Their album gave them the opportunity to open for acts including Fear Factory and Econoline Crush. A local radio station, The Fox, broadcast the songs from Flaw's indie disc, giving them further notoriety.

Two more independent records, 1998's self titled album Flaw and 2000's Drama were later produced. Flaw then signed to Universal/Republic Records in 2000, and proceeded to release their debut album, Through the Eyes in 2001. The album eventually topped the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, due to moderate rotation of their music videos "Payback" and "Whole" on MTV2 and rock radio stations. In 2002, the band played at Ozzfest.

In 2004, after three years without releasing a new album, Flaw returned to the studio to begin recording their second studio album, Endangered Species. The band had parted ways with guitarist Jason Daunt and drummer Chris Ballinger and added Micah Havertape as their new drummer. The only single released from Endangered Species was "Recognize" and it received little amount of radio play. A music video was supposed to be filmed for the single but it never happened.

Endangered Species debuted at #42 on the Billboard Top 200, selling 27,527[citation needed] copies in its first week.

Breakup and post-breakup projects (2004-2006)

Flaw was dropped by their label Universal Records in late 2004 and eventually broke up. The band's final days left many angry fans venting on the band's message board. The band had scheduled a few shows within their surrounding states, and when the break-up news began to circulate, no one from the band stepped forward to confirm or deny it. Several fans drove hundreds of miles to see the shows only to be told by club managers that the band unexpectedly canceled without notice. The group's website had, at the time, still displayed a notice which read "Flaw is still playing".

After Flaw broke up, Chris Volz eventually started up an entirely new band with drummer Ivan Arnold who had played with Flaw from 1998 to 2000. The new band, Five Bolt Main, signed with Rock Ridge Records and released two albums before disbanding.

After leaving Flaw, Jason Daunt played in another Louisville band called Into Another, as well as going back to school for a law degree. Chris Ballinger played in a few bands and Lance Arny began playing guitar for a band called Nailgun Strategy in Louisville.

Micah Havertape went on to play with Black Market Hero alongside ex-40 Below Summer members. Ryan Jurhs was also playing in BMH but eventually left the group..

Flaw reunion (2006-2008)

In 2006, Flaw reunited with four of the founding members: Chris Volz, Jason Daunt, Lance Arny, and Chris Ballinger. The band recruited former Darwin's Waiting Room/Five.Bolt.Main/Alston bassist Alex Cando on bass.

On March 11, 2007, at Headliner's Music Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, the band played its first show since their break up, sharing the stage with Powerman 5000 before heading out on their own reunion tour with Arny's other band Nailgun Strategy. On this tour, Flaw announced that they hoped to release an album in Summer/Fall 2007 and were trying to find the right record company to sign with. Future tour dates with Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo went swiftly to packed houses around the country.

During 2007, Daunt was only been able to make a couple of the shows due to his work as a full-time lawyer. For all the shows Jason was unable to make, Andy Russ from Arny's other band, Nailgun Strategy, performed in Jason's place.

Alex Cando left sometime in mid-2007 and is now playing bass for the Illinois band Silence Is Broken.

In late 2007/early 2008, it was announced by close sources to the band that Ryan Juhrs had re-joined Flaw on bass and Andy Russ has permanently replaced Jason Daunt on guitar, who could not play with the band anymore due to conflicts with his career.

In 2008, Volz and Daunt formed a new band called Foundation. At this point the other three members of Flaw (Ballinger, Arny, & Juhrs) tried to carry on as Flaw and even looked for a new singer, but Daunt and Volz reclaimed the name Flaw and applied it to their new band.

In December 2008 a MySpace bulletin was posted by Flaw stating that all future concert dates had been canceled due to conflicts between Volz and current members of the band.

Present(Summer 2009)

After months of internal problems, internet rumors, and fan confusion, Volz, Arny, Jurhs, and Russ have come forward claiming that former "hired guns" in Flaw hacked the official MySpace and wrote false information regarding Volz's personal life and the band's status. They have since announced the addition of drummer Sean Rued, reclaimed their official MySpace page, and revealed that they are working on a new album, as well as playing regional dates. Flaw revealed via myspace that their new album is to be released in November though a full release date is not released yet. Song titles for the upcoming album include "Blood Red Sky", "Walls", "After All", "Voices", "Irrelevant", "Somebody's Victim", "Alive Again", and "Anybody Listening?"
