Fletcher Henderson's Sextet (1950)

Album Review: Fletcher Henderson's Sextet (1950)

Review

Recorded only a day or two before a stroke ended his playing career and, soon afterward, his life, this LP contains a broadcast that finds Fletcher Henderson playing mostly standards with a fine sextet. Trumpeter Dick Vance and clarinetist Eddie Barefield were alumni of his orchestra but it is tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson who takes honors on this spirited session of small-group swing. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
