Flo

A mobile TV technology from QUALCOMM that uses the Forward Link Only (FLO) technology to deliver video to cellphones. FLO uses the same radio frequency in each cell so there are no handoffs as there are in traditional cellular systems. It also uses a layered modulation approach in which a base layer is transmitted along with an enhancement layer. The base layer reaches all phones in the total coverage area, while the enhancement layer provides a faster video frame rate in phones closer to the towers. The layered method allows for a graceful degradation of service.

The MediaFLO Network

In 2005, QUALCOMM announced that its MediaFLO subsidiary would build out a multicast 3G network in the U.S. Using the FLO interface and designed to deliver multimedia content to CDMA2000 and WCDMA operators, it is expected to be completed by 2011. See mobile TV and mobisode.

Flo is an American sitcom television series which ran from 1980 to 1981 on CBS. The series was a spin-off for Polly Holliday, whose portrayal of the sassy and street-smart waitress Florence Jean Castleberry ("Flo") on the sitcom Alice struck a chord with viewers.

Synopsis

Flo is on her way to Houston, Texas for a new job as a restaurant hostess (as described in her last appearance in Alice) when she stops to visit her family in her hometown of Fort Worth, which she refers to as "Cowtown," as do many real-life locals. In a fit of nostalgia, she buys a rundown roadhouse she had enjoyed in her formative years, and names it "Flo's Yellow Rose." Coping with the business, as well as her mother and sister, caused most of the conflict in the series.

Vic Tayback made one appearance as Mel Sharples from Alice. Once Flo began, Polly Holliday never appeared again on Alice, except in flashback clips in the last episode.

The short first season (spring 1980) was a ratings success.[1] The following season brought a sharp decline in numbers (due to a timeslot change), and thus ended Flo.

The theme song, "Flo's Yellow Rose" was written and sung by Hoyt Axton, who would co-star with Holliday in the 1984 film Gremlins.
