Review

Flowers on the Wall is a straight CD reissue of the Statler Brothers' first Columbia album from 1966. The title track gave the quartet its first hit and put the album on the pop charts. The Statler Brothers probably didn't anticipate their pop success, but their album conveniently contains a broadly appealing selection of songs from Chuck Berry's "Memphis" to the pop standard "The Whiffenpoof Song." Lyrically, "My Darling Hildegard" is every bit as offbeat as "Flowers on the Wall," while "The Doodlin' Song" is an attempt at more conventional humor. "I Still Miss Someone," by their mentor Johnny Cash, shows that it isn't all fun and games with the Statler Brothers, and that they can provide an affecting straight performance when the need arises. A strong debut from one of the greatest vocal groups in country music. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
