Flurbiprofen eye solution

What is flurbiprofen eye solution?

FLURBIPROFEN (Ocufen®) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Flurbiprofen is used in the eye to lessen problems that can occur during or after some kinds of eye surgery. Flurbiprofen is also used to relieve inflammation and itching of the eyes. Generic flurbiprofen eye solution is available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• bleeding problems
• if you use contact lenses
• an unusual or allergic reaction to aspirin, other salicylates, other NSAIDs, foods, dyes or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Flurbiprofen eye solution is only for use in the eye. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after use. Tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down with your index finger to form a pouch. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, fingertips, or any other surface. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Close the eye gently to spread the drops. Your vision may blur for a few minutes. Use your doses at regular intervals. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with flurbiprofen?

Do not use any other eye products without telling your prescriber or health care professional. Check before stopping or starting any of your medicines or non-prescription products.

What should I watch for while taking flurbiprofen?

Unless your prescriber or health care professional gives you other instructions, you should not wear contact lenses while you are using flurbiprofen eye drops.

What side effects may I notice from using flurbiprofen?

Side effects with flurbiprofen eye solution are uncommon.
Local effects in the eye include:
• burning or stinging of the eyes or eyelids
• itching or tearing of the eyes
• bleeding in the eye
• redness or swelling of the eye or eyelid

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature. Do not refrigerate. Protect from light. Throw away any unused eye solution after the expiration date.

Flurbiprofen is a member of the phenylalkanoic acid derivative family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to treat the inflammation and pain of arthritis. It is known by the following tradenames: Ansaid, marketed by Pfizer, and Froben, by Abbott. Flurbiprofen is also used as an active ingredient in some kinds of throat lozenges.

The single enantiomer of racemate flurbiprofen, tarenflurbil (R-flurbiprofen), is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer.
