  1. The act or an instance of following up, as to further an end or review new developments: The follow-up is often as important as the initial contact in gaining new clients. The social worker's emphasis on followup reassured her clients.
  2. One that follows so as to further an end or increase effectiveness: The software was a successful follow-up to the original product.
  3. An article or a report giving further information on a previously reported item of news.

Intended to follow up, as to reinforce or evaluate previous action: a followup examination after the surgery.

In general: any letter, telephone call, or personal call subsequent to a contact or communication intended to continue or to further evaluate the earlier contact. See also follow-up letter; inquiry and follow-up.

Marketing: step in a marketing plan that follows the implementation of an advertising campaign or promotion or the introduction of a new product, in order to evaluate the results.

[common] On Usenet, a posting generated in response to another posting (as opposed to a reply, which goes by email rather than being broadcast). Followups include the ID of the parent message in their headers; smart news-readers can use this information to present Usenet news in ‘conversation’ sequence rather than order-of-arrival.
