(b ?Marseilles, c 1150; d Toulouse, 25 Dec 1231). Provençal troubadour. At first a merchant, he was at the Aragon court and in cities in southern France; he entered the church c 1195 and established Toulouse University in 1229. He left 29 poems, and melodies for 13 survive; these are notable for their use of characteristic melodic formulae.

Folquet de Marseille (fôlkā' də märsā'), 1150-1231, Provençal troubadour. He took orders, rose to be archbishop of Toulouse, and became notorious as the chief prosecutor in Provence of the Albigensian Crusade. Dante awarded him a place in Paradise.
