Village in Belgium, scene in 1745 of an important battle of the War of Austrian Succession, in which the French under the maréchal de Saxe defeated the Anglo-Allied troops under the duke of Cumberland. Here the French commander d'Anterroche reputedly issued the invitation to Lord Hay: ‘Messieurs les Anglais, tirez les premiers!’
