One of the commonest features of occupational customs, found in many trades, which required a newcomer to a firm, or a colleague ending his apprenticeship, to pay for drinks, or an entertainment for the other workers. Usually called ‘paying one's footing’ and sometimes referred to as ‘foot-ale’. See also building trade.Hazlitt, 1905: 242; EDD.
That portion of the foundation of a structure which transmits loads directly to the soil; may be the widened part of a wall or column, the spreading courses under a foundation wall, a foundation of a column, etc.; used to spread the load over a greater area to prevent or reduce settling.
