No jokes about "herd mentality," please. Foremost Farms USA (owned by some 2,700 dairy farmers in its founding state of Wisconsin and six other upper-Midwestern states) is a major US dairy cooperative. The co-op's member/farmers' herds supply some 5 billion pounds of milk per year, which Foremost turns into dairy products for its customers. Taking the cheese-head description of its home-state's citizens seriously, the cooperative makes some 500 million pounds of cheese every year, along with butter, and dairy-based ingredients. To reduce its dependence on commodity products, Foremost also manufactures value-added items, such as pharmaceutical-grade lactose and whey-based ingredients.
