A colourless solution of methanal (formaldehyde) in water with methanol as a stabilizer; r.d. 1.075–1.085. When kept at temperatures below 25°C a white polymer of methanal separates out. It is used as a disinfectant and preservative for biological specimens.

A 37% solution of formaldehyde used as a fixative and, diluted to 10%, as a treatment and prevention for ovine footrot. Also used for the treatment of fungal diseases of fish but may be toxic if contaminated with paraformaldehyde.

  • f. ether sedimentation of feces — a method of flotation of Giardia cysts.
  • f. treated grain — fed to cows to produce dairy foods with a high concentration of polyunsaturated fats. May cause rumenitis and diarrhea if improperly prepared.
