Forrest Sherman class

US Military Dictionary: Forrest Sherman class

A class of destroyers designed during the late 1940s and built in the 1950s. These were the last standard destroyers built by the U.S. Navy after World War II, with the most modern weapons and crew conveniences, including air conditioning throughout the ship and more living space for the crew than earlier destroyers. This destroyer class continued to be modified during the 1960s and 1970s. The last ship of this class was decommissioned in the early 1980s.
