Fort Munro is a hill station in Dera Ghazi Khan which lies on the Quetta Road 85 km from Dera Ghazi Khan city in the Sulaiman Mountains Range. Its elevation is 1800 meters (6,470 feet) above sea level and attracts many people for short stays during the summer. Fort Munro also known as Nimroo (by local people in Balochi Languge) is named after General Munro, who was appointed in Multan (Punjab) during British reign before independence of Pakistan (1947). Those who are acquainted to Multan, know better for what things this city is famous: mangos and its hot climate during summer (temperature exceeds even 50 degrees Celsius). So to get some relief General Munro came here, and used to shift his headquarters to Fort Munro during summer season. Then the name Fort Munro stuck. Now this town is officially known as Fort Munro, by local people as Nimroo, and its old name was Thal. Thal is a word of Balochi Language meaning a plain ground. As Fort Munro is surrounded by hills and there are some square kilometers of plains (Fort Munro is a valley in fact) for that reason it was called Thal.
