Fr?d?ric Fr?gevize

(b Geneva, 1770; d Geneva, 9 Oct 1849). Swiss painter. He began by painting on enamel, at which he became very proficient, producing portraits, landscapes and flower pictures. Moving to Berlin, from where his family had originated, he devoted himself to painting in oil on canvas and became a member and professor of the Berlin Akademie. He specialized in landscape painting but produced some genre paintings and portraits. The best-known of his landscapes are those that reproduce effects of moonlight. In 1823 he was made an honorary member of the Soci?t? des Artistes, Paris. In 1829 he returned to Geneva. His paintings are notable for their careful technique, probably deriving from his early experience of working on enamel. He was the father of Edouard Fr?gevize (b 1840), a lithographer and painter.
