(b Bordeaux, 27 July 1741; d London, 20 July 1808). French composer. After working in Paris he moved to London in 1764, and became a leading figure in musical life there, appearing as composer and soloist (on the violin and viola d′amore), often with his wife, the singer Polly Young. He wrote and contributed to some 40 stage works, 1766-88, including the burletta Orpheus (1766), his first success, and ballets. He was a friend of Haydn's and may have suggested the subject of The Creation. His works, in style akin to J. C. Bach's, include sonatas, symphonies, violin concertos and songs.
