France has competed at every celebration of the modern Olympic Games, although the participation at the 1904 Games is questionable, with Albert Coray's appearance being credited by different sources to either the United States or France.

France has hosted the Games on five occasions:

French athletes have won a total of 636 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, with fencing and cycling as the top medal-producing sports. France has won an additional 83 medals at the Winter Olympic Games, mostly in alpine skiing.

The National Olympic Committee for France was created and recognized in 1894.
