Francine "Francie" Calfo is a fictional character, Sydney Bristow's close friend on the television series, Alias. She was portrayed by Merrin Dungey.

Biography

Francie was the best friend of Sydney Bristow, with the two being roommates for some time. During the early parts of the show, Sydney was tormented by having to keep her espionage lifestyle hidden from her closest friends, especially Francie. Francie would act as an occasional sounding board and confidante for some of Sydney's personal issues. Francie eventually decided to open a restaurant and then became romantically involved with her friend, Will Tippin.

Francie appeared in a brief flashback in the series finale, in which it was revealed that Sydney met Danny Hecht — the man who would become her fiancé and whose death would lead her to become a double agent — through Francie and her boyfriend.

Allison Georgia Doren

Midway through the second season, on orders from Arvin Sloane and Julian Sark, Francie was killed and replaced by a genetic doppelganger, Allison Doren, to use Francie's relationships with Sydney and Will to gather intelligence. Prior to the discovery of her name, this fake was unofficially named "Freplica" or "Francinator" by fans of the series.[citation needed] Allison, who was Sark's lover, bugged Sydney's apartment, hypnotically interrogated Will and planted eavesdropping devices on Michael Vaughn. On Sloane's orders, she murdered Marcus Dixon's wife to avenge Emily Sloane's death at his hands.

At the end of the second season, Will and Sydney both begin to suspect that Allison is a fake. Allison appears to kill Will (though it would later be revealed that he survived the attack), and then battles Sydney in vicious hand-to-hand combat before Sydney shoots her three times, apparently killing her. She later turns up alive in the third season, only to be killed - apparently for real this time - by Will.

Trivia

The character shares a name with a onetime vice president in charge of drama series development at Touchstone Television [1], who currently serves as Executive Vice President for Development & Current Programs at ABC Entertainment. Alias is among the series the real-life Francie Calfo once oversaw in her earlier position.
