Hutchinson, Francis (1660-1739), historian. Born in Causington, Derbyshire, and educated at Cambridge, he became Vicar of Hoxne in Suffolk. An Historical Essay Concerning Witchcraft (1718) reflects his experiences of such cases. On his appointment as Bishop of Down and Connor in 1720 he went to live in Lisburn. To speed up conversion on Rathlin Island he sponsored the publication of The Church Catechism in Irish in 1722. His A Defence of the Antient Historians, with a particular Application of it to the History of Ireland and Great Britain (1734) reveals his familiarity with Irish mythology.
