Francisco de Paula Linares Alcántara (April 13, 1825 - November 30, 1878) was President of Venezuela (1877-1878) and a member of the Liberal Party of Venezuela, military and Venezuelan politician, president of the Republic (1877-1878), Congress gave him the title of “the Great Democrat”

Early life and career

Francisco Linares Alcántara was born in Turmero, (Aragua state) in April 13, 1828, son of a general of the Venezuelan Wars of Independence.

He began his military specialty in 1846, participating in the Federal War (1859-1863) and in defense of the liberal cause (1868-1870). His political career began in 1854, as a deputy to the National Congress by the Aragua state.

Politician

In 1873 president Antonio Guzmán Blanco named him first 'designated' of the Republic, and as so he was in charge of the executive authority in that year and also in 1874. In 1877, after prevailing in the elections, he was chosen as president by the National Congress. His government, which was characterized by its democratic opening, published the denominated Decree of La Paz (The peace) (May 1877), that authorized the return to Venezuela of the opponents of Guzmán Blanco, among them the Archbishop Guevara y Lira. Also, he initiated reforms in favor of economic autonomy for the diverse states of Venezuela. Francisco Linares Alcántara died on November 30, 1878 in La Guaira, during his presidency.
