US Military Dictionary: Frank Jack Fletcher

Fletcher, Frank Jack (1885-1973) naval officer, born in Marshalltown, Iowa. Fletcher received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in the Mexican War (1846-48), the Navy Cross for service in submarine-infested waters in World War I, and the Distinguished Service Medal for his role in the Battle of Midway (1942) in World War II. Fletcher commanded naval forces in the North Pacific (1943-45) and oversaw the occupation of northern Honshu and Hokkaido after the surrender of Japan. He was promoted to full admiral and retired in 1947.
