Review

Documentation of the elementary school years of one of the more popular indie-label acts who flout an aggressively poppy rock sound. Across 26 tracks, each one named using a different letter of the alphabet, Braid meticulously defines, in somewhat course means, a smattering of the different textures and movements they would later follow on their more popular Age of Octeen and Frame & Canvas. Jangly energetic bursts of melodic punk styles in more excess than you can handle. Despite the many moments that lag or lack focus, there are many moments encrusted here that make this album a necessity for most Braid fans. ~ Blake Butler, All Music Guide

Professional reviews

Frankie Welfare Boy Age Five is the debut full-length album by Braid in 1995 on Divot Records. The album features 26 tracks, each one beginning with a different letter of the alphabet. The songs are short (peaking at just over four minutes but often as brief as one), sporadic and more abrasive than future Braid releases, often slipping into hardcore and back again within the songs' compact run times.

In between each song is a brief interlude of AM static noise broken up by roughly ten-second excerpts of songs by other bands, some of whom were friends and others were bands that the members of Brain had previously been a part of. They include: Aprilaire; Cap'n Jazz; Seven Inch; Get A Pony; Gauge; Basil and Michelle; Trigwater; Gila Bend; Car vs. Driver; Ingot; Back Of Dave; Kevin, Mike, and Tim; Cinco de Gatos; Hubcap; Target; Davy; Jumpknuckle; Max Win; Basil, Kevin, and Kim; Mary Me; C-Clamp; Tetsuo; The Sky Corvair; Guttersnipe; and Friction
