Douglas Andrew Fraser (born December 18, 1916 in
Fraser's father moved to Detroit, Michigan when he was a young boy. Shortly afterwards, his mother, with young Douglas, as well as his sister and brother, sailed to New York aboard the SS Cameronia and were inspected at Ellis Island on 23 April 1923. They travelled to their new home in Detroit via train. At 18, Fraser started work in an automobile factory, where he became active in union activities.
He was president of the United Auto Workers union from 1977 to 1983. He is best known for his role in negotiating with Chrysler Corporation during their government-sponsored bailout, obtaining a greater voice for the union in corporate governance. In an unprecedented move, Chrysler Corporation named Fraser to its Board of Directors from 1980-1984.
Fraser retired from the UAW in 1983.
