Founded in 1859 to mean 'Friar Benedict', a celebrated local hermit, from the Spanish fray 'friar' or 'brother'. Famous as a large meat-packing plant, the Fray Bentos brand of corned beef took its name from the city-port when a London meat firm began operations here in 1864.
