Biography
At the age of 17, Cruse left Arkansas to begin studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). In San Diego, while working as a lifeguard and model, she met fashion photographer Richard Avedon for whom she worked off and on from 1977 to 1985. During this time—while assisting in the shooting of In The American West—she found she was more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, leading to a career in photography.
In 1976 Cruse married real estate developer Ivan C. Gayler. After the birth of their daughter in 1976, they separated in 1978 and divorced in 1980. She met Jack D. Douglas, a UCSD sociology professor, who assisted Cruse during this difficult time, becoming not only a mentor but a lifelong friend. Cruse started as his research assistant but became his co-author from 1978-1988, culminating in their book, Love, Intimacy, and Sex.
Cruse graduated from UCSD in 1980 with a triple major BA in English, American Literature and Sociology. In 1981 she married nuclear scientist Thomas Atwell and they had a daughter, Nikki Lee (1982-2002). In 1984 Cruse was named one of "America’s Outstanding Young Women," an honor presented to her by then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Cruse and Atwell divorced in 1987.
In 1988 she married Charles R. Phillips, Jr., and they had a daughter in 1989.
In 1990 Cruse founded HELP UP, Helping Educators Leaders Professional/Parents Understand Parenting. HELP UP provides seminars and training to social workers, teachers and other professionals.
Cruse received a Master's degree in Social Psychology in 1993 and a PhD in Social Psychology in 1998, both from the University of Honolulu.
As a result of her daughter's death in 2002, Cruse Atwell formed the Nikki Lee Atwell Foundation.
