Plot

Freddie Prinze Jr. headlined this ABC sitcom as Freddie Moreno, a professional chef living and working in Chicago. As the show got under way, freewheeling Freddie's bachelor pad was "invaded" by a battalion of females: his flighty widowed sister-in-law, Allison (Mädchen Amick); his overbearing divorced sister, Sofia (Jacqueline Obradors); his sassy 13-year-old niece, Zoey (Chloe Suazo); and his intractable Puerto Rican grandma (Jenny Gago), who understood English but refused to speak it. According to network publicity, the series was inspired by the star's own life; after the death of his comedian father, Prinze Jr. had been raised in a predominately female household. And speaking of the elder Prinze, Freddie emulated the classic Chico and the Man in one respect: there was a generous supply of ethnic humor, most of it deriving from the inherent clash between Puerto Rican and Chicagoan lifestyles and values. Finally, the series echoed several of Prinze Jr.'s theatrical films, in which he was upstaged by comic actor Matthew Lillard, by adding the scene-stealing character of Freddie's womanizing best friend, Chris, played by Brian Austin Green. The weekly, half-hour Freddie joined the ABC prime-time lineup on October 5, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
