Frederick Steele

Steele, Frederick (1819-68) Union army officer. From New York, Steele served ably in the Mexican War (1846-48). In January 1862, as a brigadier general, he assumed command of the Division of Southwest Missouri; that spring, he commanded a division in the Army of the Southwest. Steele fought with Gen. William T. Sherman at the Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, winning promotion to major general. He was a commander in Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's assault on Vicksburg and then took command of the Department of Arkansas. In 1865 he commanded a division during the siege of Mobile; after the war he was sent to Texas, where he remained for two years.
