Freedom Pass is a free travel scheme which is provided by London borough councils as part of the to give 1.2 million older and disabled Londoners free travel on almost all public transport in London. The card is cross-compatible with the English National Concessionary Bus Travel Scheme, and also allows free travel on any buses throughout England.
All London Freedom Passes will need to be renewed by the end of March 2010 due to new technology required nationally in these types of travelcards. Renewals will be happening in phases by surname. Read more about the renewal on the Freedom Pass website.
The Freedom Pass is valid on London Underground, London Overground, Bus, Tram, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and National Rail services in the Greater London area and on a limited number of services outside this area. The scheme is managed by London Councils, who also manage the Taxicard low-cost taxi scheme.
Freedom Passes can be used at any time on the Tube, London Overground, Bus, DLR and Tram services, and in standard class on many, but not all National Rail routes in London (rail routes coded orange in the Freedom Pass map). Passes may be used after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and public holidays in standard class on most National Rail services (coded red). Alternatively just search by borough on the interactive map to see where restrctions apply.
The Freedom Pass is not valid for travel on National Rail train services operated by CrossCountry, Grand Central, Hull Trains, East Midlands Trains, Gatwick Express, East Coast, Virgin Trains and Heathrow Express, or on Heathrow Connect between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow.
When travelling across the Freedom Pass boundary, standard extension tickets from and to the Freedom Pass boundary can be purchased.
English bus passes are valid for travel on TfL buses 24 hours a day. Since April 1st 2008 bus passes for the over-60s and those with a disability issued by any local authority in England, including the Freedom Pass, are valid on many local bus services anywhere in England. This does not apply to other countries of the UK or to National Coach Services or to other transport than buses, but does apply to some coach routes, for example some routes operated by Green Line Coaches.
Exceptions
The Freedom Pass is not valid on some local bus routes in and around the boundaries of London and there are a number of restrictions on National Rail services.
