The United States has no official language. English (96%), Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese are the most common languages spoken in the United States. Because the founders of the country spoke mostly English, it became the de factonational language. To speculate if French could have become the official language, is a stretch, even though there were many French explorers in land to eventually become the United States. If there was any possibility of French becoming a national language, the prospect dissolved after France agreed to the Louisiana Purchase (about 23% of the land mass of the mainland United States.
