'Friedensfeier'

‘Friedensfeier’, a hymnic poem by F. Hölderlin, celebrating peace in the cryptic prophetic language of his maturity. The occasion of the poem was the signing of the peace of Lunéville in 1801 (see Napoleonic Wars). The poem was not known until the discovery of the MS. in 1954. Another untitled fragmentary version, beginning ‘Versöhnender der du nimmergeglaubt’, was already extant.
