Friedenspreis des deutschen Buchhandels was introduced in 1950 at the International Book Fair at Frankfurt in order to promote international understanding by the annual allocation of the Peace prize to an elected author of any race or nationality. Among the early German-speaking recipients of the Peace Prize are M. Tau, the first laureate, A. Schweitzer, M. Buber, C. J. Burckhardt, H. Hesse, R. Schneider, K. Jaspers, Th. Heuß, P. Tillich, Nelly Sachs, and E. Bloch.
