German Literature Companion:

Friedrich Justin Bertuch

Bertuch, Friedrich Justin (Weimar, 1747-1822, Weimar), was in the ducal service in Weimar but resigned in 1786. He wrote unsuccessful plays, and was chiefly active as a translator and popular publicist. Among the works he translated was Don Quixote (1775). He also issued a collection of Iberian works (Magazin der spanischen und portugiesischen Literatur, 1780-3) and founded the Allgemeine Literaturzeitung (1785). He published the first German fashion paper (Journal des Luxus und der Moden, 1786-9) and a series for children (Bilderbuch für Kinder, 1796-1834). In furtherance of these activities he established his own publishing firm in Weimar in 1791. He was on friendly terms with Goethe.
