In the 1990s, soul veterans like Willie Hutch have two choices: they can either stick with the type of soul music they've always done, or they can go high-tech and aim for success in the urban contemporary arena. The latter approach isn't necessarily bad -- as long as the artist is true to himself/herself. And Hutch generally sounds sincere on the urban-oriented From the Heart. Hutch's voice had held up well over the years, and his charisma is advantageous on "Love You With a Feeling," "She's a Super Lover" and other smooth cuts that aren't unlike something Freddie Jackson would do. On "So Excited," Hutch transforms the Pointer Sisters' mega-hit into a relaxed slow jam. Though not on a par with his classic '70s recordings, this is an enjoyable effort that Hutch's more devoted fans should be aware of. Unfortunately, the obscure CD received very little attention, and in fact, many fans of '70s soul had no idea that he was still recording. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
