The volume of gas remaining in the lungs after resting expiration; it is the sum of the residual volume of the lungs and the expiratory reserve volume, typically about 2.4 l.


n. (Abbr. FRC)

The volume of gas remaining in the lungs at the end of a normal expiration. Also called functional residual air.
