Gabriel Eduardo Saporta is the former lead singer, bassist, and lyricist for the punk band Midtown, and is currently the lead singer and primary creative force behind the band Cobra Starship. In 2006, Gabe and William Beckett of The Academy Is..., Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, and Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds appeared on Cobra Starship's first single, "Bring It (Snakes On A Plane)", and later appeared in a music video for the song. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Snakes On A Plane and played during the closing credits of the film. The band now consists of new members Victoria Asher, Ryland Blackinton, Nate Novarro, and Alex Suarez.

Saporta grew up in Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey.[1] He attended Rutgers University. Prior to starting Midtown, Saporta was in the New Jersey-based punk rock band Humble Beginnings. Cobra Starship is signed to the Decaydance imprint on the Fueled by Ramen record label. Cobra Starship released their second album ¡Viva La Cobra! on October 23, 2007.

Early life

Gabe Saporta was born in Montevideo Uruguay to Diego and Jeanette (both of Jewish descent[citation needed]); in WW2 his dad became a doctor in Uruguay. He has a younger brother named Ricky, who is two years his junior. When he was 4, his dad decided that he did not want to stay in Uruguay anymore and they moved to the United States. His father then had to restart medical school in America. The family then settled into a one-bedroom flat. They separated the room with the curtain. His father sold scarves on the street; he then left to go to medical school and Saporta did not see him for seven years. By the age of 8, he found music as a sense of escape. He found a love for hair metal. When he was 12, his father had returned from medical school and they had moved to a middle-class suburb. When Saporta was fifteen, his mother filed for divorce. The resulting legal battle ended in Saporta's mother taking everything from his father.[citation needed] Saporta then left with his father, not wanting to be with his mother anymore. After the divorce, he discovered an affinity towards punk and hardcore rock, such as Nirvana. Saporta enjoyed attending concerts with friends until a knife was pulled on him during such a concert. He and his friends then considered forming a band and performing locally. The concerts grew in popularity in his small town, until about 500 people would attend each week. Saporta then joined another band, Humble Beginnings.[2] He attended Jewish Day School in West Orange, NJ,

Personal life

Saporta is a vegan. [3] While on tour with Panic at the Disco and The Academy Is... in New Zealand, Saporta opened a New Zealand bank account. He stated "My bomb shelter is going to be here (New Zealand). That's why I'm opening a bank account" in an interview. In 2008, Saporta had surgery to remove a cyst on his vocal cords.

Saporta is currently working on the third Cobra Starship album entitled Hot Mess, and has recently released the songs "Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We're Famous" and "Good Girls Go Bad."
