Biography

Charpentier studied in Montreal and also in Paris with Boulanger. After working for the CBC in Montreal for many years, he became artistic director of the Pro Music Society. He was a consultant for the Shakespeare Festival at Stratford, and Charpentier composed seven incidental scores for that company. His opera An English Lesson (1968) was first performed at Stratford. He has also written stage works that can be compared to medieval religious drama. In addition to his stage works, Charpentier has composed for film, chamber and choral groups. He has collaborated as a writer with many Canadian composers, including Garant and Mercure. He wrote the text for Mercure's Cantate pour une joie. ~ Lynn Vought, Rovi
