Gabriel Gabiro

Gabriel Gabiro, (born January 21st, 1981), is a Rwandan journalist/political commentator that has worked for several leading international news organisations including the Associated Press(AP), Agence France Press (AFP), Time magazine and Hirondelle News Agency.

Gabiro is probably the youngest Rwandan journalist to work for an international news organisation. His first full-time employment for an international news agency was at age 19 with the Swiss- based Hirondelle Foundation as its reporter at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania.

Prior to that, he briefly worked for the Kigali based The Newtimes as a trainee reporter. Gabiro also worked for The Outburst--a student newspaper which he co-founded at Kigali International Academy.

He has also appeared on various international media including the BBC ONE, BBC WORLD, RFI and Al-jazeera as a commentator on human rights and development stories related to Rwanda.

He has reported from Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 2000, Gabiro was assaulted by the then head of the Rwandan presidential guards when he tried to force his way past guards at the presidential compound to report on the visit of the then president of the UN Security Council Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. The military officer was cautioned by his superiors after the incident was reported in local media.

His critics in Rwanda accuse him of being pro-west.
