Gabriele Basilico

Basilico, Gabriele (b. 1944), Italian photographer who studied architecture in Milan and photographed Italy's social scene in the 1970s before turning to the post-industrial urban landscape. From Ritratti di fabbriche (1982), the DATAR project (1984-5), and series on Beirut, Berlin, and Milan in the 1990s, Basilico has pursued a coherent, Atget-like endeavour: a cumulative investigation of the relationship between individual buildings and their urban context, in a style distinguished by a revealing vantage point, rigorous composition, and low-key printing.

— Antonello Frongia
