The Gainesville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) consisting of Alachua and Gilchrist Counties in the state of Florida in the USA. The principal city in the MSA is Gainesville. In 2007 the population of the MSA was 257,099.[1] The Gainesville, Florida Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area was first defined in 1971, consisting of only Alachua County. In 1983 Bradford County was added to the MSA. Bradford County was removed from the MSA in 1993. In 2003 Gilchrist County was added to the MSA.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 232,392 people, 92,530 households, and 51,494 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 74.53% White, 18.53% African American, 0.25% Native American, 3.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.35% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.55% of the population.
The median income for a household in the MSA was $30,877, and the median income for a family was $40,536. Males had a median income of $29,665 versus $24,003 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $16,225.
