Galen of Pergamum

Philosophy Dictionary: Galen of Pergamum

(c. AD 129-c. 210) Famous Greek physician and anatomist, although he also wrote as a philosopher. Galen's influence on medieval thought and medicine was second only to that of Aristotle, not so much for any philosophical doctrine but rather as an example of excellence in empirical science combined with what was taken to be an ardent religious faith. However, his philosophy has again become the focus of scholarly interest. See also four humours.
