At Galiform kitchens and joinery hold the keys to the castle. The company's fast-growing Howdens Joinery subsidiary (founded in 1995) operates some 465 outlets in the UK and France that cater to the local building trade. Howdens, which began opening stores in France in 2008, operates about a dozen outlets there. Ultimately, Galiform expects the two countries to support at least 600 Howdens locations. The company makes its kitchen cabinets, doors, and complete kitchens at two factories in the UK. Previously known as MFI, the company sold its struggling ready-to-assemble furniture operations and stores in 2006 amid slumping sales, and changed its name to Galiform when the deal was complete.

History

The Company was founded by Noel Lister and Donald Searle in London in 1964 as Mullard Furniture Industries ('MFI'). Mullard was Searle's wife's maiden name.[1] For a short time in the 1980s the Company was part of the Asda Group.

In September 2006 the loss making MFI Retail arm was sold to Merchant Equity Partners for £1, while the Company retained Howdens Joinery builders merchants.[2] In October 2006 the Company changed its name to Galiform.

In December 2008 the Company reported that it was uncertain as to what liabilities might revert to it as a result of MFI Retail going into administration although it disclosed that had previously entered into guarantees for the rents of 46 MFI stores.[3]

Operations

The Company trades as Howdens Joinery. Howdens have circa 450 depots in the UK and also trade from several depots around the Paris area in France under the name of Houdan Menuiseries S.A.

Howdens kitchens are manufactured at plants located in Runcorn and Howden.
