is pronounced gal-ǝnt in the ordinary meaning 'brave', and -lant in the special meaning 'attentive to women, amorous' and the related noun 'lover or paramour'. Fowler thought that these two uses were, even then (1926), 'perhaps moribund', but they persist, usually in fictional or romantic contexts rather than in everyday language.
