Jazz accordionists have always been rare, and Pete Selvaggio's resume (which includes stints with Guy Lombardo, the Three Suns and the Four Lads) does not look too promising from a jazz standpoint. Actually, Selvaggio has a light sound, seems to be at his best on romantic ballads, and displays impressive technique with plenty of subtlety throughout this CD, released by Koch in 1996. Backed by a good rhythm section (comprised of Bob Fraser on acoustic guitar, bassist Bill Plavin and drummer Val Kent) and joined on two tunes by tenor saxophonist Ernie Krivda, Selvaggio shows that he can swing and that he has a lyrical style. This is a fairly relaxed date that might convert some accordionphobes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
