Gamera vs. Jiger

Plot

This is one of the strangest entries in the Japanese horror-fantasy series. It begins as the organizers of Expo '70 dig up an ancient sacred statue. This unearthed icon causes the release of Jiger, a giant lizard. It is up to Gamera, now a defender of humanity, to destroy him. During their titanic battle, the reptile's tail pounds the turtle in the chest thereby injecting it's eggs into Gamera. It is not long before a baby lizard hatches and begins sucking the great turtle's blood. To save their dying hero, two brave children enter his bloodstream via a submarine, and destroy the reptilian parasite. Meanwhile, Expo went on without a hitch. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Review

After a couple of entries where it veered into the goofy/dumb side of the kiddie movie, the Gamera series regained its footing with Gamera Vs. Jiger. It follows the same "kids plus Gamera vs. attacking monster" formula that had become the basic Gamera-film archetype but it also introduces a few wrinkles that help it stand out from the rest. To begin with, the kid heroes are smarter, braver and more intelligent than the kids in previous Gamera outings. Instead of just cheering Gamera on from the sidelines, these kids directly help their hero in a memorable sequence where they use a mini-sub to enter Gamera, Fantastic Voyage-style, to help with a nasty alien-induced health problem. Gamera Vs. Jiger also offers some unique scenery via Japan's "Expo '70," which provides a novel and impressive backdrop for the monster fights. Director Noriaki Yuasa helms the proceedings a stylish yet kid-friendly way, mixing a "don't talk down to kids" message with some surprisingly intense monster battles. The latter stuff is the real draw here and Gamera Vs. Jiger delivers: the first skirmish between the title characters is surprisingly brutal, Jiger also has a really neat death ray that can vaporize people and the final battle delivers all the building-stomping/burning fun a kaiju eiga fan could hope for. In short, Gamera Vs. Jiger is one of the best entries in this series and well worth a look to Japanese monster-flick enthusiasts. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi
