Gaoyao City (Chinese: 高要市; pinyin: Gāoyàoshì) is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhaoqing prefecture-level city in Guangdong province, in southern China. Population: 706,000.

Geography
Gaoyao is located on the southern bank of the Xijiang River, just opposite to Zhaoqing City. Both are about 100 km away from Guangzhou, the provincial capital. 23°1′50.76″N 112°27′0.48″E / 23.0307667°N 112.4501333°E
History
Gaoyao was established as a county as early as in the Han Dynasty. It was named after Gaoyao Gorge (now renamed Lingyang Gorge) on the Xijiang River, and became a city at county level in 1993.
Sights
Places of interest include the Red Mansion and Gaoyao Xuegong Pavilion.
There are also 3 pagodas that can be seen in Gaoyao.

Miscellaneous
- Gaoyao is closely connected with Zhaoqing City geographically as well as culturally. The two cities are connected by two road bridges and a railway bridge.
- Gaoyao is also a known hometown for many Overseas Chinese and has a large diaspora in Sydney, Australia.
