Uttarakhand province of India located in the northern part of country is geographically and culturally divided into two main parts, named Garhwal and Kumaun. At present there are 8 districts of Uttrakhand in Garhwal and the rest 5 are in Kumauin. Out of roughly five million people of Uttrakhand state half of them live in the Garhwal region. The Garhwal region is known for its scenic beauty and tourists destinations of religious importance. Two of the most important rivers of India named Ganga and Yamuna originate in Garhwal Himalaya. Garhwal is also known for Chardhamas named Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri which atttacts hindu devotes from all over the world. Most of the tourists places in Garhwal are open in the summer months (May-October).
Although people living in Garhwal use their own language named Garhwali but Indian national language Hindi is well understood in all parts of Garhwal. The main natural resources of Garhwal are jungles and its rivers. One of the biggest dams of the world named Tehri Dam which is built on river Bhagirathi (Ganga) is located near Tehri Town. Apart from that there are many other hydroelectric units are there some of them are still under construction. Garhwal is very rich in flora and fauna and hosts many of the national parks of Indian including Rajaji National Park, Corbet National Park. Apart from national parks, Garhwal also hosts one of the winter sports place named Auli.

How to reach Garhwal
Although the nearest railway station to reach Garhwal is Rishikesh but one can reach to other stations Haridwar and Dehradun also which are not far from Rishikesh. The nearest airport is Jauli Grant air base in Dehradun. The best way to go garhwal is to reach Delhi and from there one can take buses for all parts of the Garhwal from the Interstate Bus Terminal at Kashmiri Gate. Most of the buses leave between 7 to 10 PM and reach their destinations after 10-15 hours journey.
When to go Garhwal
The best time is summer i.e., from May to October. However, one should avoid monsoon months named July and August because frequent landslide can cause a lot of difficulties.

In general Garhwal is always cold so one should take warm cloths when going there.

The main tourist activities are Pilgrimage, mountaining, wild life, river rafting, rock climbing, winter sports etc.
