Wikipedia:

Garnet Hughes

Major-General Garnet Hughes was a Canadian military officer during World War I.

Hughes was the son of Sir Sam Hughes, a Canadian politician and Minister of the Militia during the war.

Upon the outbreak of war, Hughes sent by his father to Europe, accompanied by his friend and fellow officer Arthur Currie.

His friendship with Currie later soured. When Currie took command of the Canadian Corps in 1917, he refused to allow Hughes to serve under him, ascribing incompetence to Hughes during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. This was vigorously protested by Hughes' father, who unsuccessfully lobbied for Currie's removal.
