Life's Work

Actor Gary Dourdan appears on the CBS top-rated television drama C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation. Dourdan's character, Warrick Brown, is one of a group of forensic investigators trained to solve crimes by collecting evidence from crime scenes. "When I decided to get into acting I wanted to break down stereotypes that limit people in their imaginations," Dourdan told TV Guide. "Not that coroners are exactly cool now, but at least we're showing them in a more youthful light."

Dourdan was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of five children born to Robert Durdin, an agent who represented jazz musicians, and Sandy Durdin, a fashion designer--Dourdan changed the spelling of his last name when he began acting. The Durdins encouraged their children to pursue interests in the arts.

Devastated By Brother's Death

The young Dourdan particularly admired his brother, Darryl, who was 17 years older and a DJ at Temple University's WRTI radio station. Darryl gave his little brother flute lessons, and Dourdan's childhood dream was to follow in his brother's footsteps. But when Dourdan was six years old, Darryl was murdered in Haiti while researching the family's history. An unknown assailant pushed him off a cliff from his motel balcony. Haitian police could find no suspects or possible motive for the crime. "It was a mysterious event, and we don't have any answers," Dourdan told TV Guide.

After graduation, Dourdan embarked on, as he told TV Guide, a "reckless period." Instead of going to college or pursuing acting auditions, he began to abuse alcohol and drugs. He drifted between Philadelphia and Miami, played in some New Jersey bands, then settled in a basement apartment in New York. He supported himself by working in restaurants as a chef, but was frequently fired from these jobs for coming to work late.

Cast on A Different World

Dourdan stopped using drugs and drinking alcohol in his twenties, without having to seek help from a rehabilitation clinic. He began acting again and won roles in off-Broadway shows. He also studied at New York's Strasberg Institute. His first big break came when he was cast in the Cosby Show television spin-off A Different World as con artist Shazza Zulu. Dourdan appeared on the popular series from 1991 to 1993. He also appeared on the TV show The Good Fight (1992) and on the 1993 HBO mini-series Laurel Avenue.

While working on the stage, Dourdan met model Roshumba Williams. The couple married in 1992, but divorced just two years later. "We were both too young for the commitment," Dourdan told The Mirror. "I just woke up one day and thought, 'I don't really know this person.'"

Two short-lived television series followed: 1995's The Office and Swift Justice (1996). In 1997 Dourdan appeared opposite David Duchovny and Angelina Jolie in Playing God. That same year, he was cast in Alien: Resurrection with Winona Ryder and Sigourney Weaver.

Dourdan often found that the roles available to him were limited to drug dealers and other criminals. "It was purely and simply because of the way I looked," Dourdan explained to The Mirror. He had spent 11 years growing dreadlocks, but his image was too easy to stereotype. "Although I had plenty of work, I was tired of playing people who lacked other dimensions," Dourdan continued. So Dourdan changed his image, most notably by cutting his hair, and the work dried up. "Nobody in showbusiness could recognize me anymore," he told The Mirror.

With fewer offers for acting jobs coming in, Dourdan, who plays both the flute and guitar, decided to focus on music. He joined a jazz band and played in various New York clubs. Slowly, he began to reestablish himself in the entertainment business and over time the acting roles came his way once again.

In 1999 Dourdan starred opposite Brooke Shields and Gena Rowlands in The Weekend, an independent film which won a jury prize at the Seattle Film Festival for Best Ensemble Cast. Dourdan's character causes controversy when it is revealed during a family weekend that he and Shields' character are interracial lovers. Dourdan also appeared on the popular series Soul Food in 2000.

Cast in Successful New Series

In 2000 C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation premiered on CBS. Initially, the series was not expected to become a top-rated show. "We were underdogs for so long, and fought an uphill battle to get regular notoriety" Dourdan told Zap2it. "We fought tooth and nail just to get respect from our own company, CBS. Then we finally came through with the numbers." C.S.I. finished the 2000-2001 season as the highest-rated new drama, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for best television drama.

On C.S.I. Dourdan plays a Las Vegas casino hustler turned forensic detective. On the personal front, his character is battling a gambling addiction. Dourdan feels that he and his C.S.I. character both are outsiders. He explained to Zap2it, "Warrick was never involved in the crews ... never had the ear of the cool people. He was always on the outside of that. That is his uniqueness." Dourdan continued, "That was my whole high school upbringing right there. I had two or three groups of friends who were not really friends, they were all acquaintances, that I was trying to fit into to make myself feel partially normal. I always switched around, because I never quite got it right, until I started to get older, started to realize that I needed to completely be an individual. I never fit the mold."

Dourdan next appeared in the 2002 movie Imposter, co-starring Madeleine Stowe, Gary Sinise, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Dourdan has also continued to pursue his musical interests--he has been working on two CDs scheduled for release in 2002. One is a collection of music from movie chase scenes. "We call it Chase Du Jour, " Dourdan told Entertainment Tonight. "The other features vocalists I am friends with and writing songs for--sort of a little avant garde ... the trip-hoppish, current-day genre music that is being sought right now."

A resident of Los Angeles, Dourdan lives close to his daughter. Next, Dourdan hopes to develop a film about Phil Lynott of the group Thin Lizzy--Lyncott is Ireland's only black rock star. He is heavily involved with the Sankofa Urban Peace Awards. In 2003 CSI won Favorite Television Dramatic Series, and Dourdan was up for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor In a Drama Series.

Biography

Best known for his role as Warrick Brown, the detective with a marked predilection for risk (and an ongoing gambling addiction), on CBS's blockbuster series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the easygoing, congenial, and memorably handsome African-American actor Gary Dourdan has built his life and his public image around uniqueness and originality. Six foot two inches tall, green-eyed, sporting bushy yet sculpted dreadlocks, and straddling the worlds of drama and avant-garde music, Dourdan commented to Ebony magazine, "I've always tried to be unconventional as much as I possibly could...one thing I'm trying to do with my career and with my craft is to blur the lines between what people think African-Americans should play and what I'm doing. I'm not much into fads and fashions and trying to follow things."

Born December 11, 1966, in Philadelphia, PA, as the son of Robert and Sandy Durdin (his actual surname), the adolescent Dourdan attended "Freedom Theater," an inner-city program for aspiring actors, during adolescence. Success in this venue prompted him to travel to Manhattan on a weekly basis for musical training and dramatic auditions. Dourdan landed his "big break" as an actor in the early '90s, seemingly without even trying. While dating fashion model Roshumba Williams around 1991 and vacationing with her in France, Dourdan was spotted by powerhouse Debbie Allen, then the producer and director of A Different World; impressed by his looks and manner, she invited him to audition for the series. He played Shazza Zulu, the resident "con man" of Hillman College -- a role he sustained through the end of 1992 (for less than one season), before moving on to new endeavors. Dourdan debuted onscreen inauspiciously, with a bit part as the Second Cartel Man in Weekend at Bernie's II. Additional roles included that of a copy guy in Ron Howard's The Paper (1994), Christie in Alien Resurrection, and Yates in the Andy Wilson-directed medical thriller Playing God (1997). In 2000, Dourdan landed his biggest break with the CSI role, for executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer -- and (when the program instantly shot up to number one) continued the part as the series progressed. The same year that he signed with Bruckheimer and company, Dourdan played Malcolm X in the telemovie Muhammad Ali: King of the World. As mentioned, Dourdan is also a prolific alternative musician (with solo albums to his credit) and a record producer. He married African-American model Williams in 1992; the couple divorced two years later. He has two children, a son, Lyric, and a daughter, Nyla (the daughter of Jennifer Sutton, whom Dourdan dated from 1995 to 2000). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early years

Dourdan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Sandy, a teacher and fashion designer, and Robert Durdin, an entrepreneur and agent for jazz musicians.[1] Dourdan has African American, Native American, Scots-Irish, French and Jewish ancestry.[2] Dourdan is the second youngest of 5 children, and when he was 6, his older brother Darryl was murdered while on vacation in Haiti; the case is still unsolved.[2] He moved with his family to Willingboro, New Jersey when he was in his youth. At this time his interests included acting, music, martial arts. Later Dourdan moved to New York City and worked as a doorman at a rehearsal studio where he met some of Manhattan's promising young artists.

Career

Early on

Dourdan got his first break when Debbie Allen cast him as Shazza Zulu on A Different World based on a tape of him in an avant-garde play. He had a recurring role on the Showtime series Soul Food until he nabbed the part of Warrick Brown on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Also starred in the 1997 film Alien Resurrection as (Christie) alongside Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder and Ron Perlman.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

Dourdan's most popular role began as a cast member of the original CSI series which aired on October 6, 2000. He played analyst Warrick Brown who, viewers find out, has a dark past checkered with gambling and addictions. By working in Las Vegas, the character is able to use his personal experiences with gambling to help him throughout his career. Ultimately, he ends up battling his demons throughout the show instead of overcoming them.

Negotiations

In 2008 there was media speculation surrounding Dourdan's contract negotiations with CBS. The parties could not reach a resolution and as a result his contract was not renewed. It was reported on April 14, 2008, that Dourdan was leaving the show.[3] In the Season 8 finale, Dourdan's character was shot and left for dead at the episode's end. The Season 9 premiere revealed Dourdan's character dying in the arms of his colleague and friend, Grissom.[4]

Music

He played Janet Jackson's love interest in the video for her 1993 hit "Again".

He had a cameo appearance in the music video by Cypress Hill "What's Your Number?"

He joined hip hop artist DMC on stage at the Live 8 concert held in Barrie, Ontario, and also co-sang the lyrics to the theme song of the TV sitcom The Jeffersons at the 2005 Emmy Awards.

Dourdan is also an alternative musician and a record producer.

Other appearances

Dourdan played the character Christie, the first mate and second in command of the Betty, in the 1997 film, Alien Resurrection.

TV Guide voted him the Sexiest CSI actor on TV in its 2008 "Sexiest" issue.[5]

He was also the host of a BET spoken word show entitled Lyric Cafe.

In 2007, he played the character Cameron. Rowena Price's (played by Halle Berry) boyfriend in the film Perfect Stranger.

In 2008 he voiced the character Crispus Allen in three of the six short films for Batman: Gotham Knight. The animated short films were released straight to DVD and chronicled the time in between the films Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008).

Personal life

He married model Roshumba Williams in 1992; the couple divorced two years later.[6] He has two children, a son, Lyric and a daughter, Nyla. Lyric's mother is Cynthia Hadden and Nyla's mother is Jennifer Sutton, whom Dourdan dated from 1995 to 2000).[7]

Legal troubles

In 2005, he pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery after his ex-girlfriend Anne Greene accused him of rape and battery. He was sentenced to stay away from Greene and attend domestic violence counseling. In 2006, Dourdan sued Greene for $4 million, alleging slander and negligent infliction of emotional distress.[8]

On April 28, 2008, Dourdan was arrested in Palm Springs, California on suspicion of possessing heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and prescription drugs.[9][10] According to Palm Springs police Sgt. Mitch Spike,[11] at approximately 5:12 a.m. Monday, an officer saw Dourdan's car parked on the wrong side of the street with the interior light on and someone sleeping in the driver's seat. Dourdan was taken to the Palm Springs jail and was released on $5000 bail.[12] In an email quoted on Access Hollywood, he claims that the drugs belonged to people whom he took to a Coachella Music Festival VIP after-party.[13][14] However, friends and castmates of Dourdan said that they were not at all surprised by his arrest.[15] One of the CSI Staffers even told the Chicago Sun Times, "After this, I think there will be a concerted effort to convince Gary to get help—before he kills himself." [15] He pleaded guilty to two counts of cocaine and ecstasy possession during his arraignment on May 28, 2008. Dourdan was required to complete a 16-class drug program instead of the three years and eight months that he could have been sentenced to.[16]
